There is always a deeper meaning to the literal words of the master teachers

Have you ever had someone tell you something and believe they are saying one thing but they mean something different or have an underlying meaning? You may take it literal but there is more to the statement than the literal interpretation. I am a big movie fan. I like all genres of movies, drama, comedy, horror, action even romance movies. But keep that a secret, I have a rep to keep up. You know, the man thing and all. one of the movies that brings to mind the idea of the literal having a deeper meaning is The Karate Kid. Yes, it is an old movie but has some practical application for my article.

The literal meaning

In the movie, Mr. Miyagi (pronounced me-yah-ghe) was a wise old man that decided to befriend a troubled teen. The teen was getting bullied by some boys in the neighborhood. They all knew martial arts and the troubled teen (Daniel) did not. Mr. Miyagi decided to help Daniel by teaching him martial arts. Daniel was so excited! He started Daniel out by painting the fence at Mr. Miyagi’s residence. Mr. Miyagi gave Daniel specific literal instructions on how to paint the fence. There was a particular technique that Mr. Miyagi wanted Daniel to use when painting the fence. Next he had him sand paper his back yard deck. He again had a specific literal technique that Daniel needed to use when sanding the deck. This took awhile and Daniel was starting to wonder when he would learn karate. He was getting a bit frustrated. The next chore was to wax one of Mr. Miyagi’s cars.

Mr. Miyagi gave Daniel a specific literal technique to do this job also. Put the wax on with a particular motion andremove the wax with the opposite motion. Daniel reluctantly did the job. When he finished Mr. Miyagi asked him to come back the next day for the next job! Daniel came undone at that point. He did not come to clean up Mr. Miyagi’s residence and he told him so! He started to walk away when Mr. Miyagi screamed, WAX ON! And threw a punch that Daniel blocked with the Wax on motion Mr. Miyagi told him to use when waxing the car. Mr. Miyagi Screamed WAX OFF! Threw a punch than Daniel blocked using the opposite technique for taking wax off the car. Mr. Miyagi screamed other instructions from painting the fence and sanding the deck. Daniel complied and blocked other punches.

Finally a deeper consciousness development

What Daniel did not know was Mr. Miyagi was teaching him karate but was doing it on two levels. The literal level did have a practical application for a specific job. The deeper meaning for understanding the lesson was unknown to Daniel until Mr. Miyagi showed him WHY he had to do the jobs with a specific technique. By working from a literal stand point Daniel was now able to protect himself once he understood the deeper meaning. Daniels knowledge and consciousness grew when Mr. Miagi translated the reason for the jobs.

I use this movie as an analogy for the teaching of many of the spiritual masters that have come before. Many times the literal words they spoke had practical application. However, for the people that wanted to look a little deeper there was also a deeper meaning and understanding that was beneath the literal. Jesus in the new testament was a prime example. He spoke to the masses in parables and figuratively.

John 16:25 ”Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father.

Mark 4:33-34 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

The Masses got the basic knowledge

He gave them practical knowledge that could be used in their daily lives. He gave the masses a story that they could use and understand on a literal level. But with his disciples he explained the deeper meaning. Just like Mr. Miyagi, Jesus had a deeper level of meaning to the words he spoke. Just like Daniel didn’t understand the deeper meaning of his task, many times the disciples did not understand what Jesus meant until he explained the deeper meaning to them. an example is:

John 16:18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

Jesus was not Christian. He spoke out against the Pharisees and Sadducees the religious people of his time. What he was attempting to do, in his way,  was to teach the people of the day the universal principals that lie beneath all existence. Whether on the physical plane or any other plane. Unfortunately, just like the disciples of his day, the disciples of today do not understand the deeper meaning of the literal words Jesus spoke. At the time Jesus could explain those teachings to his disciples. Today we have a translation of the translation of his words that were written almost 200 years after the death of Jesus. People still do not on a large scale understand the deeper message that he was attempting to convey.

The time is coming that the deeper meaning will be understood by many

Today there are a bunch of Daniels running around and frustrating everybody else. They want to hoist the literal meanings on anyone and any nation. Not realizing that we all have the same information that has been adapted for different peoples and cultures. That is the reason for different religions, the stories were adapted for the people of that area. Only if we had Mr. Miyagi to teach us the deeper meanings. WAX ON! WAX OFF! Can you be a Mr. Miyagi?

we all have it with in us to understand the depths of our connection to All-that-is. We simply need to know that the experience is personal. In order to get the message you have to open up to your personal connection. You do not need an intermediary to get the message. You have the power.  Jesus and the other great teachers were attempting to spread the message of empowerment. They wanted us to know that we are eternal spiritual beings. Be brave enough to validate your own experience.

Are you a brave soul?

Here is the scene written about above, great stuff!

  1. Reginald, your analogy is so beautiful and powerful! You are right, the time is coming that the deeper meaning will be understood by many, as we get increasingly ready to open up our own personal channel of communication with Source. There are many layers for reading the message through the lines of spiritual teachings, directly proportional to our own layers of consciousness. Each level is valid and applicable, but the horizon of understanding broadens, the deeper into the meaning we go.

Thank you Palma, I really like you last line:
“Each level is valid and applicable, but the horizon of understanding broadens, the deeper into the meaning we go.”
That sums everything up. The more we understand the deeper we can delve into the meaning and what it means for us.
