Is your truth the absolute truth so help you God?

By

Recently I have been making my way around different forums. Personally I enjoy good discussion and debate. I believe that a good constructive discussion can lead to ideas being tested and consciousness expanding. As spiritual beings in human form we are incarnated on earth to learn lessons and expand our consciousness. The lesson that we learn we take with us for eternity. We all can get so passionate about our beliefs. Name any religion or body of believers such as atheist or metaphysicians and you will get a group of people that will literally fight to the death to preserve their idea of “truth.” That word truth spawns so many fights and self righteous rants. So many believe that the truth is singular and constant. In other words a “truth” is a truth for everyone and should be seen and acted on as such. However, I would like to question this  widely held belief. I would like to question it on some very simple concepts that can be extrapolated to a much broader scale.

Where did relgion get its ideas?

There is an ancient philosophy from Egypt (then called Kemit) called Hermetic Philosophy. It predates all religions. From this land we have had words and concepts passed down to us today. One word in particular still has the name of the originators of the science, which is called Kemistry or Chemistry. The word alchemy was derived from practices developed in ancient Kemit. Hermetic philosophy was so named after a man in Kemit that the Greeks named Hermes or the messenger of God.

The talking dog

The talking dog

The Egyptians called him Thoth and gave him the title “Trismegistus,” which means ”the thrice-great” ; ”the great-great’s “the greatest-great”; etc. In all the ancient lands, the name of Hermes Trismegistus was revered, the name being synonymous with the “Fount of Wisdom.” Even to this day, we use the term “hermetic” in the sense of “secret”; “sealed so that nothing can escape.” I am probably dating myself, but I remember watching the late night Johnny Carson show and him playing the “Karnack the magnificent.” He would pull out an envelope that Karnack would to his forehead. All of the envelopes were “Hermetically Sealed” in Funkanwagnulls Port. I had no Idea I was being exposed to an ancient knowledge by the great Karnack. Go figure!

Much of the teaching of Hermes Trismegistus was lost over the centuries. However, some of it was preserved and passed down through a compellation of the basic principles called the Kybalion. The Kybalion explains the seven Hermetic Principles or Universal Laws the universe is based on. All religions are an attempt to put these principles or laws in a practical and useful form for the people of the day.

The Divine Paradox

One of the philosophies of the Hermetic tradition is the paradox that all truths are half truths. It is a principle of the Law of Polarity, meaning that any opposites are the same thing but on different ends of the same pole. It is the Divine Paradox. For example, Hot and cold are the same thing but on different ends of the spectrum. You can arbitrarily decide where one ends and the other begins. You can say the same for light and dark, love and hate or any number of examples. Look at either end of the pole and it is a truth. However, it is only half of the equation. It is simply the perspective of the individual to decide which part of the pole will be recognized.

And so it goes with all of our perceived truths. Our truths can be absolute for us as individuals. But others may view it from a different end of the pole or different perspective. Wars can be started because many make the egotistical assumption that their truth is absolute, righteous and unwavering, therefore they can justify killing another that has an inferior, incorrect or unrighteous view point. The fact of the matter is their truth is just as valid, but only from a different perspective based on their experience, environment, culture etc. Here is an awesome example of the truth being seen from two different perspectives. I borrowed this joke from a friend of mine “Mia Delight” fron New Zealand on multiply.com.

The talking dog

A guy is driving around the back woods of Virginia and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: ‘Talking Dog For Sale’ He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard. The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there. ‘You talk?’ he asks. ‘Yep,’ the Lab replies… After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says ‘So, what’s your story?’ The Lab looks up and says, ‘Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.’ ‘I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals.’ ‘I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.’ The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. ‘Ten dollars,’ the guy says. ‘Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?’ ‘Because he’s a liar. He never did any of that shit!

From one persons perspective they hit the jackpot by finding a talking dog. Something absolutely extraordinary! But from the other perspective he saw a liar and was worth only 10 dollars. It was their truth based on their beliefs and background. Depending on your background you may agree with one or the other. However, it is one side of the pole.

It may be your truth that there is no God. You will attract experiences to prove your truth. It may be your truth that Jesus Christ is the savior of the world. You will attract experiences to prove your truth. The fact of the matter is that it is only half truth. It is all about perspective. No one can perceive the world for another. No one will experience the world like another. To assume that your truth is absolute and unwavering is an exercise in egotism and self centeredness. It’s as if you are telling the world that your perspective is absolute and should be shared by everyone. As the old saying goes. Opinions are just like ass holes, everybody’s got one. That dog understands.
